Do you know what’s lurking in your makeup bag? What do you apply to your skin?

We tend to forget that our skin is the largest organ in the body! What’s  inside most brands of shampoo, shower gel and soap? What about hair products? Makeup? One word: TOXINS!

Personal products are absorbed through the skin and reach the blood stream. They affect the delicate balance of the body. Infertility, allergies, ADHD, even thyroid issues are linked to toxin overload.

Drinking fresh water, dry brushing, sweating and exercise all speed up the elimination process.

Escaping toxin exposure is not always possible. Environmental and workplace toxins are hard to escape. Controlling cleaning supplies, food and personal products is much easier. I KNOW that sometimes being MINDFUL costs more. NO, it’s not fair!

Keeping in mind we have the power to control aspects. Here it goes! There are 12 toxins that are at the top of the “AVOID” list.

David Suzuki has a list entitled DIRTY DOZEN

Memorize, print or copy this list. Carry it! Please use it! The best choice is not always the easiest or affordable. Choosing companies that produce products that are healthy for humans, animals and the environment is simply responsible.

unnamed (1)Ingredients to avoid:

  • BHA and BHT
  • Coal Tar dyes. Listed as Cl followed by a 5 digit number.
  • DEA related ingredients.
  • Dibutyl Phthalate
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
  • Parabens
  • Parfum a.k.a. Fragrance
  • PEG compounds
  • Petroleum
  • Siloxanes
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Triclosan

The list is long and overwhelming! I discovered most of my products were toxic. I switched. Some products claim they are natural. They may contain a few non-gmo or pure natural ingredients. Some products have natural ingredients yet still contain chemicals. Look for VEGAN products. Also keep your eye out for a cute bunny! This means the products aren’t tested on animals!

Simple rule of thumb….if you can eat your personal care and beauty products then it’s safe! Inside safe is outside safe! Go ahead and wash, soak, apply and brush your teeth!

The last piece in this personal product make over is my cosmetic  bag. Going vegan meant a fun makeup spree to Sephora. I LOVE URBAN DECAY and TARTE. These two companies offer lovely rich colors, great packaging and are VEGAN!

BIG shout out to ANNIE! I’m re-living high-school 3x a week. She is the most adorable 17 year old girl referred to me by MISS TEEN TORONTO 2014. I am now in love with E.L.F. products. The low price point made me apprehensive BUT I am hooked. I bought a bag of products for $40. Their peta approved products are perfect.

I challenge you to take a long look at what products you use daily!!!!

Choose wisely and love the inside and out!
