My hope is that I will persuade you be open to trying something that may be gross, weird, scary and even embarrassing. Something you may have heard of, wondered about, contemplated or dismissed until this moment.
Let me start by saying, even at 44 I still feel shy, hesitant actually really uncomfortable to discuss this topic. That is precisely why I am blogging it. I wanted to discuss something I use, promote and if I’m honest maybe even love.
Do you exercise? Do you sleep at least 7 hours a night? Do you drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day? Do you eat between 25 and 35 grams of fiber a day?
Yes? No? Sometimes? All of those are common answers. These are not huge requirements. There are basic laws of living a healthy life.
If you follow these simple rules the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation suggests constipation should not be a problem. Yes, I said constipation.
Constipation is a problem in Canada. Approximately 1 million Canadians will visit their family physician complaining of constipation. Thirteen percent of Canadians will miss work or school this year because of it. Constipation obviously is a problem. Canadians are spending 100 million dollars a year on laxatives. Yes, laxatives.
Clearly someone didn’t get the memo on high fiber diets!
Yes, today I’m going to go there..the bathroom talk. The topic of constipation is something most people shy away from including me. I am going to get over it for the sake of this blog. I am going to persuade you to try something that I love yes, love.
Ok! Back to constipation. Being constipated is defined as someone who goes less than three times a week. It becomes a chronic condition if that lasts longer than three months.
According to Dr. Bernard Jensen, “when the bowel is under-active, toxic wastes are more likely to be absorbed through the bowel wall. Elimination is essential. When we clean the bowel and release all the rotting material, gas, pain and auto-intoxication are lessened.”
What is auto-intoxication you wonder! Auto-intoxication is the idea that food enters the intestine and rots. Basically, if you eat and don’t get rid of it the food stays, it ferments and it is re absorbed by the body. It doesn’t matter if the food is healthy or not, it still must be eliminated. The concept of auto-intoxication is not new. Ancient Egyptians believed toxins formed as a result of decomposition within the intestines and moved into the circulatory system.
The optimum bowel transit time is between 12 and 24 hours. Crazy to think the average transit time is 60 to 70 hours. So after you eat a meal it should go from start to exit within 24 hours. How will you know? The easiest way is the beet test! Joy Mc Carthy author of Joyous Health recommends taking this simple test. If you are going to go for it I truly encourage you to make her APPLE BEET CARROT SLAW. Eating a delicious meal of fresh raw organic beets is the only requirement. One more thing! Joy then tells you to take a look in the toilet! Yes, you are going to look!! You want to see a pink bowel movement. We all know beets make us pee pink but this is about the other one! The sooner you see PINK the better it is.
We don’t want fecal matter remaining in the body for long. If it is taking more than a day for you to see pink your digestive system is sluggish. Dr.Elson Haas points out in his book Staying Healthy with Nutrition that colon cleansing is among the most important parts of detoxification. Dr. Jensen advocates a 7 day cleansing program consisting of various supplements, herbs, broths, juices and self administered colemas.
I know you are all thinking! I eat my 35 grams of fiber. Fiber works like a tooth brush scrubbing the colon wall. But is that enough? Maybe you don’t have gas, stomach cramps, loss of appetite, headaches, foginess, pms or even low energy due to constipation on a regular basis. Drybrushing, tongue brushing, fasting can all help eliminate toxins. What about our colon? Do we do enough?
So I ask you a riddle! What do Anthony Robbins, Jennifer Anniston, Kate Beckinsale, the late Princess Diana and John Lennon all have in common? I personally think the list is longer but embarrassed was a factor.
They all love Colon Cleansing and have admitted it publicly. Yes, today I am going to let you contemplate going for COLON CLEANSING. Colonics. Colon irrigation.
Colon cleansing has been practiced since 1500 BC’s. They were administered in ancient Egypt in rivers using a hollow reed to induce water flow into the rectum. South America, Africa and Asia all used them as part of magic and medical rituals. The ancient therapy has always been a fundamental part of yoga teachings. Hippocrates described, practiced and prescribed enemas.
The 17th century was the age of the enema. People believed internal washing was essential to one’s well being. The syringes were valuable and encrusted with jewels. It is rumored that LOUIS the 16th received over 2000 during his reign.
They found popularity again in the 1900’s. In 1917, colonics and the auto-intoxication theory was prevalent. DR Kellogg, yes, that kelloggg, founder of the cereal company used enemas as treatments. He administered as many as 40 0000. He believed they were beneficial in treating different GI diseases as well as depression and arthritis.
Dr Russell was the first documented user of colonic irrigation.
With this came the beginning of 2 types of colonic hydrotherapy apparatus.
During the 1950’s colonic use flourished. There was even a street in California dubbed colonic row. It wasn’t until the 70’s they were removed from hospitals and nursing homes. Enemas and prescription laxatives took over.
There are colonic therapists, yogi’s healers some naturopaths you name it that recommend colonics for a laundry list of reasons. I’m not saying there is proof that you will have a cleaner, re-shaped and toned colon. I’m simply saying why not be open to trying one!
A colonic is simply the infusion of water into the rectum.
I find fasting for 3 days on a mono diet then going for a colonic a peaceful, personal and aligning experience.
Choosing the right spa and hydrotherapist is essential. NADIA KOTSOS (of www.detoxboutique.com) is my go to girl! Few forms, informal chat and the shy factor is gone. Nadia is a doll!
Nadia inserts a disposable speculum into the anus. The speculum is connected to a disposable plastic hose and is then connected to the hydrotherapy unit. Warm filtered water is released into the colon. The water temperature is adjusted at times. The abdominal massage is relaxing and takes the edge off. The muscles of the colon contract causing the feces to be pushed out. They are disposed into a closed waste system. NO, you can’t smell anything. NO it doesn’t hurt. There is a bit of pressure as the water fills and relief when it leaves. Yes, it was a bit embarrassing but you are in a gown. You can watch in the mirror above. Its really quite fascinating.
The session lasts 30 to 45 minutes.
There is a laundry list of reasons why you should make colon cleansing a part of your holistic health regime. I’m not saying all the reasons are proven. I don’t know if it will increase fertility or decrease your chances of getting colon cancer but I do know for me… I do feel an improved sense of well being. I do feel less bloated. I do feel energized! I do feel amazing.
Sometimes just trying something new is all you need. Being open and accepting and possibly discovering something great for you. Not everyone agrees with the practice and at the end of the day it’s a health choice that’s personal but I hope you pondered it ….and even booked one!!!
All of MERCEDES FITNESS clients and friends are eligible for an introductory session with Nadia for just $35.00
